The Railway Companies of the Royal Engineers were responsible for the construction, maintenance and repair of the vast system of railways that sprang up in the British sector of the Western Front. This often brought them close to the front line with all the extra dangers that this involved. 

Bernard Spall was killed on 21st March, 1918 while serving with the 295th Railway Company of the Royal Engineers in Belgium but as yet there is no further information concerning his death.
